- Find a good spot to work and cover nearby items with drop cloths to protect them from paint splatters.
- Sand the entire surface lightly, progressing from 120-grit, to 180-grit finishing with 220-grit sandpaper. Always sand in the direction of the grain.
- Remove sanding dust between each grit of sandpaper by lightly dragging the tack cloth across the surface.
- Using a clean, lint free rag, flood the entire wood surface with wood stain. Be generous with the amount of stain applied.
- Let the stain sit for 2-3 minutes then wipe off any excess stain, using a clean rag, wiping in the direction of the grain. Ensure that all excess stain is removed from the surface.
- Let dry for 1-2 hours.
- After the surface is dry, apply polyurethane with a high quality synthetic bristle paint brush.
- Allow to dry 2-4 hours.
- Using a pencil and tape measure, mark a line 1” away from each corner.
- Fill in the outline with Rust-Oleum Specialty Chalkboard Brush On.
- Using a synthetic brush or foam brush apply the Chalkboard Paint on the surface. Avoid excessive brushing. Use light, even stokes to ensure an even and smooth finish.
- The chalkboard finish is ready to be used after 3 days. Before writing, condition the surface by rubbing the side of a piece of chalk over the entire area and erase.
- Once completed, place your chalkboard in a special place for everyone to see.
